— The short answer
Cyberpunk 2077 scales from a six-year-old GPU up to bringing an RTX 5090 to its knees with path tracing. For maxed ray tracing at 1440p you want 12GB+ VRAM (16GB is safer); an X3D CPU helps in Dogtown and with path tracing. Standard play is GPU-bound. A FixFixLabs Cyberpunk build starts around £1,100.
The 2.x updates and Phantom Liberty turned it into a polished, dense RPG, and path-traced 'Overdrive' mode is a genuine GPU stress test. For standard play it's GPU-bound and a modern six-core handles it; path tracing and dense Dogtown add CPU load where an X3D chip helps. VRAM matters — 12GB minimum for maxed RT at 1440p, 16GB for headroom.

Get my spec & price12GB is the practical minimum for maxed ray tracing at 1440p, and 16GB gives real headroom — particularly with path tracing and high-resolution textures. 8GB cards have to compromise on RT and texture settings.
Mostly GPU-bound in standard play. Path tracing and the dense Dogtown district do add meaningful CPU load, which is where X3D processors pull ahead.
For ray tracing at 1440p and above, effectively yes. Upscaling is how modern cards deliver playable frame rates with heavy RT — quality mode is visually excellent and costs very little fidelity.
